The Mae West Fest's Female Protagonist Project seeks theatre and performance
pieces featuring the "ultimate female protagonist." She's not perfect, but
the ultimate female protagonist is inspiring or inspired, or possibly both!
Female Protagonist Project:
The Female Protagonist Project offers a competitive opportunity for
playwrights to showcase or develop new work through play readings and
feedback, as well as possible production by Mae West Fest and publication in
an anthology with other FPP winners and finalists.
The Female Protagonist Project is a playwriting competition offered by the
Mae West Fest, a non-juried festival in Seattle, WA, of plays written and
directed by women.

Plays submitted to the Female Protagonist Project competition may be
biographical, historical, or fictional. They may be comedies, dramas,
satires, farces and may or may not adhere to the style of realism. The main
criteria is that the play feature the ultimate female protagonist – however
you imagine her!

The submittal deadline for the 2008 Female Protagonist Project is December
- In the first phase, each script will be read by a broadly-based FPP reading
Scripts recommended to advance to a second-phase reading will be read by Mae
West Fest staff and other specially-selected readers.
Three finalists will be chosen; one will be designated the winner.
The winner shall be offered a public reading, subject to the standard Mae
West Fest production guidelines (except length limit), and will be awarded a
cash prize of $1,000.
The Mae West Fest reserves the right to forego selection of finalists or
winners should no submission be found to be of sufficient quality, or
appropriate funding is not available, at which point entry fees will be
Guidelines for Submissions to the FPP:
- Plays must feature an "ultimate female protagonist."
Plays must be unpublished.
Plays must be unproduced (meaning no professional productions); they may
have had staged readings, developmental workshops or non-Equity productions.
Plays must be at least 1 hour minimum in length.
Plays must be typed and submitted on white, 8-1/2 x 11-inch paper, bound in
a soft-cover 3-hole-punch binder.
Three (3) copies of the play must be submitted.
Plays must be accompanied by a letter of introduction, noting the play's
production history, and including an email address for the playwright.
Notification of the competition outcome will be sent by email.
Scripts will not be returned unless they are accompanied by a large SASE.
